On Netflix now. Biopic/comedy about Rudy Ray Moore and his movie Dolemite.
I heard good things about it, but I didn't expect to be as good as it was. Biopic + crowdpleaser are usually key words for generic, bland, unnuanced movies that aren't terrible, but aren't good either *cough* Green Book *cough* Bohemian Rhapsody *cough*. But this is a whole other story. Yes it's a crowdpleaser, but it's one of the best pure crowdpleasers in a long time. And Eddie Murphy is phenomenal, this is his big comeback. And had the acting category not been that packed, I think he would've been a lock for an Oscar acting nom. Easily his best performances in decades and rivals his best work. High 7/10 to 8/10 for me.

Really really good! 2nd half is better than the first, but the first is needed to build some pathos. By the end, I found it to have more heart than I imagined. Awesome turn by Murphy, and the side characters are a ton of fun too.

I enjoyed it. It's a romping, energetic, and funny crowd pleaser and Murphy and Snipes are surprisingly good. I have never seen the original Dolemite but I'm going to change that soon. This biopic did make me realise that Dolemite is the source of a sample used by the band Coldcut on their DJ mix 70 Minutes of Madness though with this scene (from the original) that they show at the end: ...which is sampled at exactly 60:00 on this:

Between him and Adam Sandler in UNCUT GEMS, it's the year for a few comebacks.

6/10 Eddie Murphy is phenomenal, this is his big comeback. And had the acting category not been that packed, I think he would've been a lock for an Oscar acting nom. From what I've heard/read, he's currently one of the top 10 contenders.

I had reservations about Murphy in the role, but from what I've been hearing I may check this one out.
