They were all the rage when I was in middle school. Platoon, Hamburger Hill, Full Metal Jacket and (a little later) Casualties of War all seemed to be well-received. If you look at the casts of all four movies, collectively, you have some very impressive players in a generation of Americans actors.

Not really sure how to answer your poll. If a movie set in Vietnam during the American occupation there were to be made today, I think it almost a certainty that it would be meant to reflect our current never-ending unnecessary wars that, like Vietnam, drain the U.S. of valuable resources, including the tragic loss of the lives and health of a younger (than me) generation. In that regard, they would not be "old hat."

Yea I’d say their boom has faded. Could come back around tho but who knows. It feels like it’s been a while since a really gritty one has come out.

I served in the US Military from '69 to '71. So the answer is no. Anything having to do with that debacle (cinema or doc) gets my interest.

I think it would be interesting to have a film set during the French involvement over there in the 1950s before Dien Bien Phu. There were a few made back in the late 1950's and 1960's but nothing since that I'm aware of. I guess it would have a limited audience in the states.
Has there been a film about Vietnam from the Air Force perspective? My father in law was in U-Tapao AFB working on B-52D's in the late '60s.

They are making a new Vietnam war movie with a CGI James Dean. it's going to be a disaster since bringing actors back from the dead in CGI form just causes too many questions.

How about a Nam film that shows thew postiive side of fightin' for yo country? Well, there was the old "Green Berets" with John Wayne, but I think the closest thing to a "positive" side in modern Vietnam war films has been "We Were Soldiers."

I agree with "We Were Soldiers" it is the most accurate film from that timeframe. "Platoon" defined the types of troopers that were deployed. There were dopers, boozers, and the few very religious types. "Platoon" is spot on with the characterizations.

Not necessarily. I think a great Vietnam movie could still be made. Look at 1917. That's a great WW1 movie. But generally speaking we're more concerned with the middle east nowadays.

Not only did we lose, but the atrocities that occurred over there are too great to ignore, and when the soldiers came back they were welcomed to an ever changing world in turmoil in which they weren't accepted.
I guess you could make a movie that ignores all that, but it would be a fantasy. I don't see how you could honestly spin that war in a positive way.
If you really want to do that your best bet would be WW2. In that war it was clear why we got involved (we were attacked) and what we were doing there (defeating evil Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany). Now that's heroic.

My neighbor when I was a kid was a forward air controller in Vietnam. Dangerous job flying fairly slow usually unarmed prop planes over enemy territory... |
