Let's just get it out there that the guy is a knucklehead and had been a piss poor owner but do you think that saying something stupid warrants not only losing his franchise but a lifetime ban? I mean, what he was banned for was essentially a thought crime. He didn't commit a crime, his team was finally a contender, and he was putting a lot of money back into the team but because he says something stupid, does that warrant essentially the death penalty from the league? I mean, I guarantee you that if LeBron James is heard calling someone a "cracker" nothing of this kind would happen to him. IMO, the league was looking for something to get him on to get rid of him but IMO, forcing him to sell the team and banning him from ever even being able to pay for a ticket is absurd. Should he have been punished? Probably but not that kind of punishment. Oh, keep in mind that he was such a racist in the past that he had been given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the NAACP and was set to receive another.

Funny that you bring this up because for some reason I was thinking of this the other day and was tempted to start a thread on it since I was not part of any sports board where I could have voiced my take or opinion on this when it first came up. So you happened to start it and here we are....
I have mixed feelings on this which are mostly based on not really knowing it all that well or anything about an alleged racist past of Sterling and also from a non racist white guy perspective.
Actions are louder than words and all he did was say some words.
They say he was caught on tape saying some racist remark. Do we know for sure there was no entrapment for him to have said those things? He said what was supposed to have been something in private that went public. Was that right?
It is his team and sorta his place. So why can't he have a say as to who can be there or not? If I have a party and I don't invite any black people even though I may know a couple from my workplace, does that make me a racist?
The thing that bothered me the most about this is that he is the boss, an owner of a team and the NBA stepped in and FORCED him to sell it. No warnings. No second chances. No chance for an apology or redemption.
He did make a lot of money from the sale so I'm not sure how this really punished him.
If he is really a racist then would he have bought a team where the majority of players are black and didn't he have a black or mixed race mistress?

Was Marge Schott treated fairly?
How bout Jimmy the Greek?
Or Don Imus?
Does occasionally saying an awful thing make you an awful person? If so, ALL of us are probably guilty.
Actions always speak louder than words, and Donald Sterling sure paid a lot of young black men a whole lot of money. Does that justify his racist words? Of course not, but I'm not sure it should cost him his business.

He was fired for that. Schott was a chucklehead but the Reds, for years, were one of the best teams in baseball winning 3 titles under her control and 6 pennants. Imus? what he said was insensitive but it didn't warrant being fired. Even Rush Limbaugh got fired for speaking the truth. People say stupid things all the time. Charles Barkley wasn't even verbally reprimanded for saying "That's why I hate white people". But Sterling's treatment is nothing more than PC culture gone wild. Bill O'Reilly was fired from Fox for calling a black woman "hot chocolate". I mean, really? And yet blacks can say whatever they want and nothing ever happens to them. Hell, how many NFL players are going to assault women and still keep their jobs?

Hell, how many NFL players are going to assault women and still keep their jobs? Ray Rice knocked out his girlfriend or fiance' and that was captured on an elevator security camera. Soon after that he was let go or fired by the Ravens and I don't recall if he ever got picked up by another team. Antonio Brown has now been accused for rape and that is being looked into while he sits and waits to see if any team will ever let him play again. On the other hand you have Adrian Peterson who beat his son, was suspended and they let him back in. If that had been captured on video and gone viral, he would probably be in the soup line waiting for a hot meal. And these are just a few of the reported stories.

But put O'Reilly back on TV and I guarantee you his reruns would outdraw BSNBC and the Clinton News Network by leaps and bounds like he did when he was on. Hell, your goddess Rachel Maddow's ratings are slightly above that of a test pattern.

Doesn't change the fact he was fired for wayyyyy more than one instance, he was losing sponsors at an alarming rate, your precious Fox News is the one who canned him, and Tucker Carlson isn't far behind Bill's ratings, proving that the morons who watch Fox News will watch no matter who is spitting the lies.

Who says I watch Fox News? And O'Reilly losing sponsers was a hit job by George Soros' Media Myrmidons. And Fox News lies. LOL, um, OK. Pretty funny coming from a guy who admitted he doesn't watch that channel. Oh, and Donald Trump is still your president.
