Any listeners of this genre other than me? I often find that most people have never heard of it. There is a reason for this. It is not easy listening. It is not filled with "songs" per se. They more resemble soundtracks, some thematic, most not. Here is an example by the Sleep Research Facility. It is called Nostromo. It is named after the spacecraft in the first Alien movie. In fact, the entire disc is was inspired by the first five minutes of the movie where the viewer is given a tour of the spacecraft and it's various decks. It is entirely about this tour which takes place before the humans awake. SleepResearch_Facility – Nostromowww.discogs.com/SleepResearch_Facility-Nostromo/master/112833The tracks on the disc are labeled after the different decks which make up the spacecraft. This corresponds to Deck A. Sleep Research Facility ~ Nostromo A- DeckIt's great chill out stuff. If you listen to this kind of stuff, what do you listen to?

I'll throw another one up. It is a collaboration between Robert Rich and Lustmord entitled Stalker. Inspired by the Andrei Tarkovsky film of the same name.

Big fan here. At one time I even considered Stalker my favourite album of all-time. It still ranks somewhere near the top. These days I'm listening to more music that uses dark ambient as a baseline rather than it being the main focus though. I think I've listened to so much dark ambient in my earlier years that my tastes have been conditioned into believing it is merely just ambient and that reverb and drones are a necessity for everything else.
Nowadays I'm blasting a lot of ambient music that has tonnes of texture to it and is as relaxing as it is loud. Yellow Swans, Roly Porter, Tim Hecker, Black to Comm, Belong... the list goes on. Not all of it I'd consider dark, some of it is actually very uplifting and pretty, but occasionally it dips its toes into gloomy waters:
Another ones that has been on heavy rotation ever since it was re-released last year is Christoph de Babalon's absolutely astonishing 1997 album If You're Into It, I'm Out of It, which is some furious jungle where the drums are just as pummelling as the drones.:

Good background music, but I can't imagine actively listening to this. I do like artists who've incorporated these styles (or something similar) into more song-oriented directions like Portishead and FKA twigs.

Awesome stuff driftin. Thanks for the intro to those artists. I like all three of those tracks, can't say I like one better than the other two. Good stuff.
Sometimes I go for long stretches without listening to this stuff and I miss out on a lot.

Really like the new album. Before After is rather gorgeous, like the yin to Seven Horses for Seven Kings' much more unsettling and even frightening yang. For that arbitrary reason I probably prefer Seven... but both are really good and both are highlights of my year.

Didn’t realize he had released another album this year. Gonna check it out.

With the year and decade coming to a close the conversations about the best things of the last ten years are in full swing, so for your consideration here's one of the louder moments from The Haxan Cloak's Excavation: It's a highly celebrated album for its type but I also reckon it's good enough to be mentioned amongst all the other greats of the 2010s regardless of genre. It's also one of the bassiest things ever and sounds utterly immense blasted at full volume through some massive speakers. The flimsy things they pass as speakers on phones just will not do. I'm lucky enough to have a copy of it which he signed in the most troo kvlt \m/ way possible (at a gig where he was supporting Fuck Buttons): I also love the fact he's gone on to work with Björk,The Body, Goldfrapp, and on movie soundtracks with Atticus Ross and on this year's Midsommar score - all of which I like even though it's all a completely different style but I'm aching for a new album from him. I want some window-shattering horror again. Here's hoping for something in 2020.

Will give it a few listens over the holiday and get back to you. I like the clip you posted.

An album I listened to an awful lot a few years ago was Sleep Chambers' Sirkle Zero, though I don't recall liking much else by them.
