Are you stating that Pesci, DeNiro and Pacino looked like wax figures? I haven't watched it yet - - I'm wondering if some people ended up paying too much attention to the special effects rather than the story. Huh? If you haven't watched it then why toss out some arbitrary comment that most people had to google?

C) There have been multiple critics who have talked about it.

C) There have been multiple critics who have talked about it. It's an understatement to say I'm smarter than the average person and I was unfamiliar with the concept of Uncanny Valley. Seems like an odd thing for critics to discuss concerning the movie but I admit I don't pay attention to critics much anymore. Maybe I should watch the trailer but I don't want to feel eerie and revulsion.

I'll give you folks this though - it was better than the Godfather movies. Last 1/2 hour was just as slow though The Godfather is the greatest film ever made.

I have not seen a Al Pacino this good in almost 20 years. But, it was Joe Pesci who stole the movie. Great movie, but probably doesn't need to be this long.

Yeah - it's been awhile since I've seen him in anything relatively decent - 20 years sounds about right. If you've ever seen 2002's 'Insomnia' with Robin Williams - he was tremendous in that. I think The Devil's Advocate and Donnie Brasco were also late 90s if I'm not mistaken - he was terrific in both of those films as well. Think Heat was mid 90s. Righteous Kill in 2008 with DeNiro is a guilty pleasure of mine. I remember watching the Irishmen thinking I wish Pacino and Pesci had more screen time together - it seemed like DeNiro was with either Pesci or Pacino - in fact - I can't remember - it's been weeks now - did we get to see all 3 together at once?

Insomnia was the movie I was thinking when i tried to think back the last good Al Pacino. I don't remember anything stood out after that. I didn't see Righteous Kill. It looks bad, it sounds bad, and I heard it is bad, so I never get to it. Maybe I should give it a try.

Great take I saw on the Film General board recently: "I've watched the first hour and I think this film is overrated!"

Great take I saw on the Film General board recently: "I've watched the first hour and I think this film is overrated!" Could it be the person expecting an action film? There are many compare it to Goodfellas, understandably so. It would be a mistake if one expects a similar film as Goodfellas. This one is more a drama with a big "D".

A lot of people want instant gratification these days. They consume entertainment; they don't digest it.

The Godfather is the greatest film ever made. JAWS, The Shining, Braveheart and Gladiator all disagree. They can disagree, but they would be wrong. Gladiator is one of my favorite movies, but on no planet is JAWS a better film than The Godfather, opinions be damned.

Jaws is indeed better than Gladiator, though. I disagree, but can get behind it. Both are great movies. I enjoy Gladiator, but every time I see it the old style Hollywood cliches pile up more and more and it all seems more rote and routine. And all of the characters put together aren't as interesting as Quint. Joaquin Phoenix certainly is excellent in it though. I legitimately hate his character each time. But it's basically the Spartacus + Braveheart + a lot of CGI, and while some of those effects were state of the art it didn't have nearly the influential effect that Jaws had. Nor the story telling or inventiveness.

Finally finished this last night. I ended up watching it in three one-hour chunks; outside of football, I just don't have the ability to sit down and watch something for three hours anymore.
Personally, I give it an 8/10. Maybe it would seem more ponderous watching it in totality in one sitting, but I was never bored by it. It's easy (and perhaps foolish) to read it as being somewhat autobiographical on Scorsese's part, but I thought it was a well done meditation on death from so many different angles and times in one's life. To have these older actors (the main three but smaller roles like Keitel's as well) and an older director ruminate on life and death was moving. I didn't find the last 30 minutes boring at all - - to me it stuck the landing to the theme.

The really great thing about Insomnia was Robin, he was superb in that. And that one where he works at the photo mat, (kind of the same character). I loved Robin as the creepy bad guy.

Robin Williams dark roles were terrific.
Love Insomnia - give it a watch every year - own it - all star cast Pacino and Swank are great.
One Hour Photo is tremendous - own that too - haven't watched it in a few years - sad/dark/creepy movie.
That movie struck me in a sense - you never know who your neighbors/coworkers truly are - i.e. what type of life they live outside of the workplace.

Scorsese's latest is slated for Netflix release on Wednesday. De Niro, Pacino, Pesci star. Will you be watching? No need to answer that, obviously the answer is yes. How much are you anticipating this one? Perhaps (at all, as well) you've been fortunate enough to see it already on the big screen in select theaters? When it hits, post your thoughts. could only watch 30 minutes before turning it off. well directed as much as that goes; but screenplay was all over the place. i watched the criterion dvd, and it had the old title 'i heard you paint houses' flash on the screen, not the Irishman, was this a different version shown on netflix?
