Relying strictly on memory, I believe Richard Dreyfuss.

From nominees I'd be happy with Allen, Burton or Travolta. I'm not big on Dreyfuss but I don't especially object to his win... thought the film was pretty mediocre though - not one of Simon's best scripts. From a quick survey of my favourite films of that year (I keep a list ready to roll for those BEST OF YEAR threads) I can't see a lot I really thought were great Richard Pryor from BLUE COLLAR may well be my favourite ... and Keitel less eyecatching but probably as good for same film Dennis Hopper in AN AMERICAN FRIEND and John Heard in BETWEEN THE LINES I liked a lot.... and I wouldn't have a problem with this as a nominee or even a winner. ... it has given me more pleasure than almost any other scene from a film that year.... Scheider in SORCERER/WAGES OF FEAR I'd buy. ... there of course may be performances I thought were great in films I didn't like enough to include in my BEST OF YEAR lists Probably a better year for supports (Gere and Berenger from GOODBAR, Walken from ROSELAND, Walken again or Tony Roberts from ANNIE HALL, Yaphet Kotto from BLUE COLLAR were among the splendid support turns ignored that year - although Robards was fine choice for winner)

Going with either Richard Dreyfus in Close Encounters or Alec Guinness in Star Wars. Roy Scheider is pretty great in Sorcerer as well.

Mark Hamill seems to be underrated in this thread but I think I would choose him.
