"He told us to imagine no possessions and there he was, with millions of dollars and yachts and farms and country estates, laughing at people like me who had believed the lies and bought the records and built a big part of their lives around his music."
"I would listen to this music and I would get angry at him, for saying that he didn't believe in God… and that he didn't believe in the Beatles. This was another thing that angered me, even though this record had been done at least ten years previously. I just wanted to scream out loud, "Who does he think he is, saying these things about God and heaven and the Beatles?" Saying that he doesn't believe in Jesus and things like that. At that point, my mind was going through a total blackness of anger and rage. So I brought the Lennon book home, into this The Catcher in the Rye milieu where my mindset is Holden Caulfield and anti-phoniness."
I recall where I was as a boy when I heard the news come though on the radio. I was listening to some show or other. Can't really imagine it these days - probably Twitter and other such sites are where things like this are heard first, I don't know.

I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the 20th anniversary of his death. They had a big Beatles display with instruments, hand written lyrics, and clothing. I remember going to the top floor and seeing a glass case that contained the glasses he wore when he was shot, still caked with blood, and a bag containing the bloody clothes he was wearing. It was very surreal.

The only thing even remotely good about that was that for the next two weeks radio stations played nothing but Beatles music. That eased the pain a bit. Otherwise, just a miserable Christmas season that year.
I still tear up when I see footage of the folks who gathered at the Dakota immediately after it happened. Shock and sadness plastered on their faces. I have a friend who lived in New York at the time and he was one of the crowd at the Dakota. People were singing Give Peace A Chance through tears.

I never understood or could find reason for putting on display his bloodied glasses. Who the f*** would want that?

As Paul said, "A drag isn't it?"
His son Julian said he was a hypocrite.
I read that he treated his fans like crap, even the ones there around the Dakota. He looks irritated in that photo.
