Happy 249th Birthday Beethoven! For my selection, I have picked the final minutes of βFidelio,β the Masterβs only opera. The story so far: Leonora, disguised as the title young man, has saved her husband from execution at the last second in a prison for political prisoners. The Enlightened Ruler has arrived to set all the prisoners free and reunite them with their families. As the clip begins, Leonore is handed the key to her husbandβs shackles. Then everybody sings her praises. Enlightenment principles and married love triumph. 7 minutes (you don't have to watch the bows). Enjoy.

Next year orchestras all over the world will have big Beethoven celebrations, I suppose.
I don't think I've ever seen one of his major symphonies performed live. I will try to catch the 5th and/or the 9th if possible.
