The J.J. Abrams mega-tentpole, made for an estimated $250 million-$300 million, is opening in a distant fourth place in the massive Chinese market, earning less than any Disney 'Star Wars' trilogy title to date.
The forecast for Skywalker's full run currently sits at a lackluster $17.8 million (RMB125.3 million). If the forecast holds true, Rise of Skywalker is in for an almost exponential China comedown from both Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi ($42.5 million in 2017) and Abrams' own The Force Awakens ($124 million in 2015).

That's crazy. Maybe it's because of trumps tariffs.

Star Wars has consistently done poorly in China, nothing new with this film.

Star Wars has never been popular in China. why not? They're Asian. Asians like shit about space and lasers Amusing explanation by Donnie Yen in a Screen Rant article.
"...Yeah, and that’s unfortunate. Star Wars – Chinese audiences didn’t grow up with Star Wars culture so unfortunately it didn’t work. Marvel is a lot easier to understand. Star Wars, there’s a whole universe out there. Marvel, from the costumes, to the music, to the idols, to the stars, it's much easier to close the gap between the film itself and the audience."

It's stupid to make movies for the globe. Different societies have different cultural standards. A joke in the US is not received the same in China and vice versa. Yet it was said the reason movies were getting dumber was because they wanted to make them understandable around the globe. In other words sell out Western audiences for a one size fits all agenda.
If these studios had to worry about competition, they would be in big trouble.

Star Wars has consistently done poorly in China, nothing new with this film. It's news to @poes though so it must be shared. It's the closest he'll get to sharing news that Daisy Ridley died of a pill overdose.

Ha ha even Alita Batle angel made more in china than Frozen 2 and Force awakens. And Rise of Skywalker has already made more than Alita worldwide. Good luck getting that sequel. (For the record, I thought Alita was an okay movie. Seeing it used to bash other films, such as Captain Marvel and now Rise of Skywalker, makes me happy that it's fans will not be getting another one.)
