An oft-repeated topic round these parts, but still, I've nothing better to do with my time.

I usually post a few, but this time I thought I'd go back and play the originals first. They're all really good.

The Ramones - Caliifornia Sun Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
I know that it's an ancient folk song, but Simon and Garfunkel were basically covering Martin Carthy's arrangement of Scarborough Fair, and I prefer S&G. Both versions are beautiful though.

My late beautiful precious Billy Joe Royal covered at least seventy two songs...after seeing so many songs that were done first by him become more successful through other singers, you can't say that the man didn't know how to fire back! Google "Down In The Boondocks", "I Knew You When", "Hush", "Yo-Yo" and "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden". Anyway, to me, his best cover is this song which I believe was done first by an earlier singer named Ricky Nelson. To me, what really brings Billy Joe's copy to life is not just his voice, but how the song is done at all. All you have to do is CRANK IT UP!!! God bless you and his family and the Nelson family always!!! Holly P.S. The following are the songs that I am aware of Billy Joe eventually taking his crack at for whatever reason there really was for him to even touch them. "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away"-This song was covered by him in 1965 and 1992. "Save The Last Dance For Me"-This song was also covered by him at least twice. His first copy was released in 1967. There may be three recordings of him doing the song. "Campfire Girls"-This song was covered by him twice. "Every Night" "This Magic Moment"-This song was first covered by him in 1973. It was covered again by him sometime in the early 1980s. "Under The Boardwalk"-This song was covered by him in 1978 and in 1988 with fellow late singer Lynn Anderson. "He'll Have To Go"-This song was covered by him in 1980 and 1987. "Wurlitzer Prize"-This song may have been covered by him two times. "You've Really Got A Hold On Me"-This song may have been covered by him two times as well. "Luckenbach Texas" "Bring It On Home" "Take This Job And Shove It" "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" "Amanda" "Solitary Man" "Fox On The Run" "Middle Age Crazy" "Your Cheatin' Heart" "Makin' Believe" "If We're Not In Love By Monday" "Your Man Loves You" "Broken Down In Pieces" "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" "You're Right, I'm Left, She's Gone" "She Never Knew Me" "Lucille" "Fox On The Run" "Do You Love As Good As You Look" "Oh No" "Yesterdays Song" "Wake Up Little Susie" "Good 'Ole Boys" "The Old Songs" "Cracklin' Rose" "Cryin' "I Love A Rainy Night" "Love On The Rocks" "Please Come To Boston" "Hey Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" "So Into You" "Let Your Love Flow" "My Girl" "Another Saturday Night" "Up On The Roof" "On Broadway" "Stand By Me" "If I Could" "To Love Somebody" "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" "Spanish Harlem" "Lavender Blue" "Drift Away" "Nobody But You" "Boardwalk Angel" "I Miss You Already" "Give 'Em My Number"
"Members Only" "It Keeps Right On Hurtin'"-This song was covered by him in 1987 and later on again in 2014 I believe.
"Tell It Like It Is" "Kiss And Say Good Bye" "Till I Can't Take It Anymore" "I'm Sorry" "Talk It Over" "Just When I Needed You Most" "CC Rider" "Rockin' Robin" "Little Bitty Pretty One" "I Fought The Law" "The Twist" "96 Tears" "Last Kiss"

And Led Zeppelin's Dazed and Confused is better than Jake Holmes' Dazed and Confused.

The Residents - I Can't Get No Satisfaction The best version without a doubt, but I'd also say Devo's take is better than the Stones'.

Here's a curious one for me: Marsheaux's take on "Eyes Without a Face". It relies a fair bit on the chillwave/retro atmosphere and on evoking a certain nostalgia that Idol's take already has in spades, and likewise I feel that her voice might be laying the dreamy, breathy quality the track already possesses a little to thickly compared to Idol's crooning - but where it succeeds over the original is that it does away completely with the awful cock-rock bridge, to replace it with a more synthpop-inspired break that feels a lot less jarring in the overall context of the song. It's my preferred version of the track even if an ideal could be comprised from ideas of the two:

Another Billy Idol cover: "White Wedding", this time by Rowland S. Howard, converting it into an Americana-inspired Nick Cave-esque goth rocker instead of the glammier affair of the original, and making it all the more effective in turn:

It's hard to know where exactly to draw the line for a "cover" when it comes to vapourwave, mix-tapes, remixes, plunderphonics and other sample-heavy movements - essentially a lot of sample culture can be seen as treating the original music as material for collages or musical readymades... But still, some of the most evocative and fascinating takes on 80s and 90s tracks can be attributed to the movement. See this wonderful take on Sonic R's "Livin' in the City", by death's dynamic shroud:
Or, controversial as it may be, this loop for "Don't Give Up", edited by Daniel Lopatin/Oneohtrix Point Never:

And whilst we're in the topic of Stones covers, here's P.P. Arnold's groovier, soulier take on "You Can't Always Get What You Want":

With just one acoustic guitar Nancy Wilson outshines Peter Gabriel.
I'm unaware of any other cover better than Jimi's original.
M.A.C.C. is Mike McCready, Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam), Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron (Soundgarden)

And it's fair to say that Keiji Haino's version is the most ... erm... abstract.
