Rickie Lee Jones : The Duchess Of Coolsville
'Elvis Cadillac' - Rickie Lee Jones
Rickie Lee Jones was born on the north side of Chicago, Illinois, on November 8, 1954. Her grandfather was vaudevillain Frank 'Peg Leg' Jones, and her grandmother was crazy-legged dancer Myrtle Lee. Peg Leg was one of the finest ukelele players in the land. Her father, Richard Jones, was a songwriter and trumpet player who also worked as a waiter. Her mother, Bettye Jones, was a waitress who played music.
The family relocated to Arizona in 1959, where Jones rode horses and studied dance. In the mid-1960s, the family moved again, this time to Washington state. Her parents separated, and for a time, Jones lived with her father in Missouri. She enrolled in college back home in Washington. Upon turning 18, Jones left home and moved to California.
"It's clear to see that there's a generation of proud young women in music who cite Rickie Lee Jones as their artistic inspiration. This was the message ringing loud and proud at the 'Music Made By Women' event held in Watford in 2014, providing a platform for aspiring female singer-songwriters and blues-belters to share stories of their experiences trying to get into the music business."

'Sideways' - Jo Harman (named 2014 Female Vocalist of the Year at the British Blues Awards)
'Any artist who counts Tom Waits and Johnny Depp among his best friends sounds like someone I'd like to learn more about.
Chuck E. Weiss is a staple of the Los Angeles music scene, but he may be best known for his long friendships and creative partnerships with Tom 'n' Johnny. Waits, who has known Weiss for more than 40 years, has co-written songs and performed with him. In the early '90s, Depp was instrumental when Weiss wanted to resuscitate an L.A. club (reopened in '93 as the Viper Room).
Both men executive-produced Weiss' new album, Red Beans and Weiss. Though most would consider Weiss a blues artist — he has performed with Lightnin' Hopkins, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters, among others — he's influenced by a variety of genres and sings with a raspy, jazzy howl that brings Waits' own pipes to mind.
For a better taste of Red Beans, stream the whole album in advance of its April 15 release on Anti- Records. I probably don't need to write this, but just in case: If you dig Tom Waits, he's gonna be up your alley. (Another fun fact: Weiss inspired Rickie Lee Jones' 1979 hit Chuck E's in Love. The guy knows everyone.)
Weiss doesn't often play outside the L.A. area, but you can watch him perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he appeared this week on the same night as, you guessed it, Johnny Depp.'
