18-year-old Markus Leväniemi is one of the many young men that have gone missing aboard Finnish cruise ships. Markus went missing in January, 2007 aboard the Viking Isabella, which was going to Stockholm, Sweden from Turku, Finland.
After his mother died, Markus lived with his cousin. He was on the ship with his cousin Toni (and the cousin's wife Taija) and their au pair.
The cousin's wife (Taija) was on the dance floor, and that was the last thing she remembers from it. She said it was strange, considering she hadn't been drinking that much. She went into their cabin to sleep, while the men continued partying. Toni also went into the cabin later, as Markus and the au pair continued partying.
Markus returned to the cabin in the small hours. He didn't seem intoxicated, but explained that he had to "fight" with a security guard. Soon after, he left again - this time without his shoes, only his phone.
The next morning, Toni and Taija weren't too worried. Markus had some other friends aboard the ship, so they assumed he was sleeping in their cabin. That wasn't the case though. The friends told the couple that Markus had gotten into trouble with another group of people.
As the ship returned to Turku, the couple and the au pair were assigned to leave the ship like other passengers. The ship returned the next day and they searched the ship, to no avail.
Toni and Taija were allowed to view CCTV footage of Markus, which contained several alarming actions.
One part of the footage shows Markus pushing a foreign man away from the cabin's door. The foreigner gives Markus a can and leaves. Soon after, Markus is leaning against a wall, holding his head. In another video, Markus was running around the ship, panicked. It seemed that he was trying to call someone.
They were only allowed to see footage where Markus was visible. For example, they couldn't see if someone else was after Markus. Strangely, several cameras were out of service during his disappearance.
The ship's car deck wasn't checked, though it would be easy to kidnap someone and drive away with them once the ship reached the shore. It'll soon be 13 years since Markus went missing and he has never been seen again, dead or alive.
