I read the first book in that trilogy, and I can't say I'm surprised by the poor reviews. It really felt like an author scrabbling for something new and interesting to right about, and lumping the word Jesus in there so that it would be discussed as a philosophical work or important allegory from the start. It was an odd depiction of some kind of mythical communist country, with a maverick parent/child combination as protagonists who float through the story without rhyme or reason. Didn't feel like he'd particularly thought it through, proof-read, or even gave a toss about the outcome.
