.......are slowly disappearing ?? For instance, our local area has lost almost all of the following in recent years, and from what I've seen, they probably aren't going to be coming back anytime soon, if ever: Hobby Shops Book Stores Bowling Alleys Ice Cream Shops Toy Stores TV/Electronic/General Repair Shops Any other things that seem to be in the process of evaporating before our very eyes, possibly never to return?? )I'm not sure that "Drive-in" theaters exist, anymore. The last time I went to one, was in college (we got a little movie watching in ), and that was decades ago. Even "regular" theaters are disappearing in my area. When I was growing up, there were several in all of the neighborhoods. That's gone.

Radio Shack
Short Wave and CB stores
Montgomery Ward (long gone)
Vacuum tube testing kiosks in local drug stores
In my local park district, the PD would set up goal posts in the fall. No more, they have been replaced by soccer nets

Divtal - when I was growing up, there were 5 cinemas within walking distance from my house. There is only one left, and it has reverted to a revival house.

Pay phones. I know where a couple still are, but phone booths seem extinct.

Oh......and outdoor skating rinks. Growing up here in southeastern Wisconsin we always had a number of rinks every year (a number of which were within walking distance from our home), which were frozen ponds, or flooded areas in our local parks (all complete with warming pavilions!) that were setup for skating, free of charge, all winter long. Now, thanks to the fear of lawsuits from people getting hurt, they are all long gone. And though (I believe) there are still a few outdoor rinks available in our state, it's just a bare few that, surprise, surprise, are (of course) no longer free to anyone..... SAVE FERRIS

Click on this link and then on your state or nearby state. Might be one closer to you than you thought! www.driveinmovie.com/united-states

You're right ... I am surprised. Thanks.
However, the only two that are listed as still open, and relatively nearby, are one-hour/two-hours away. It might be fun to venture toward one, someday.

Independently-run little health food stores. Nowadays they're typically some sort of corporate operation, like GNC or The Vitamin Shoppe.
Small, independently-run little bakeries are getting fewer and fewer. Nowadays, you pretty much have to settle for whatever bakery items your large grocery stores offer, and that's a mixed bag (some good, some bad, most blah).
Film development services (Fotomat-type kiosks, or photo shops inside malls or drugstores).

Indoor rollerskating rinks. It's been years and years since I went to one of those. But I think the 2 in my area that I remember fondly are still actually in existence and open for business.

I know where a couple still are, but phone booths seem extinct. The one in my home town got taken away just recently. I was driving past where it used to be a few times, and I'd get this heavy "there's something missing" feeling about the area before I noticed what was gone. Used it quite a lot back in the day, before the town got mobile coverage.

Even "regular" theaters are disappearing in my area. When I was growing up, there were several in all of the neighborhoods. That's gone. It's odd about Drive-in Theaters. There are still two in this area with the giant screen and the vast parking lot. But they've both turned into 7-day a week swap meets which are very successful. I'm surprised there's not a niche for them still. It's a huge screen and you can relax in the comfort of your own car. I'm curious why there's no market for them anymore. As with so many things, cost is likely a factor. Accommodating a great many cars requires a great deal of real estate, which is very costly in many areas. Selling that much land to builders probably brings a lot of money. One that I remember, around here, is now a gigantic apartment complex.
