Hot Shoppe Cafeteria. Used to be one in downtown Richmond, in a great old office building--both sadly gone for years. Their yeast rolls were the bomb. There were a number of them in DC as well (the chain gets a mention in the novel The Exorcist--and no, pea soup has nothing to do with it), but they've been defunct for quite some time. My mom would take me there as a treat when we went into the city to shop, so some nice memory associations involved as well.

I used to like LUMS but I think they went out of business a long time ago. I also used to like White Castles but there are none here and the frozen ones are no good. When Taco Bell started out, I loved their tacos but a few decades ago they changed them. When Arby's started they were a decent beef sandwich but now the "meat" reminds me of plastic. Favorite carry out now: The Cook Out hamburgers, I like the ones with caramelized onions, melted cheddar and bacon. ( I would loved to substitute mushrooms for the bacon but they don't have mushrooms.) I never thought Arby's roast beef tasted remotely like actual roast beef, but some of their other things are pretty tasty. Very good chili, and their chicken breakfast sandwiches are nice and crispy and well-seasoned. CookOut probably has the best burger-chain burgers of any around right now, a close tie with Five Guys.
