I'm retired, now, but I don't recall anyone having asked.
If any of my colleagues had wanted to know, the information was easily available at the station, as I was part of a bargaining-unit that was included in a national contract with ABC. Copies of the contract weren't hard to find. As they all knew my position, it was there in black-and-white.
I don't think that I would have lied. It might have depended on the circumstances, or the person asking.

Lie high. Double your salary and see what they say. I have a friend who lies about her age, by adding several years. She gets a lot of: "You certainly don't look it!"

I don't think (outside some early job applications) I've ever been asked what I make an hour. On the job applications I answered truthfully as I figured that was something people would check.
I've been asked about how much I made in general but my answer depended on if it was a friend (truthful) someone I barely knew (would generally reply that I made enough to be happy) or if it was someone I was seriously dating (truthful).

That's not something they are allowed to check when verifying previous employment unless you sign away consent for them to obtain that info. At least that's how it is in the US. Otherwise, they're taking your word. Obviously, ridiculously out of range claims will be a red flag, but a perspective employer won't be able to find out what you really made without you giving consent.

It really was early job applications though where to your point there wasn't really a lot of realistic fudging room as they were entry of workforce type jobs.

I always say I'm homeless and then I ask them for some money which usually makes them shut up.
