What is the point of a pergola? A roof with no roof? No shade from the Sun. No protection from the rain.
What's the point?

My brother has a pergola on his property. They had intended to cover the top with vines (grape, wisteria, etc.), but the contractor suggested a placement that would be protected from the direct sun, allowing the surrounding redwoods to do the provide the shade. They don't use theirs in the rainy months, but I'm sure that there are a variety of temporary panels ... vinyl, or other material ... that can be put into place, should you want rain protection. Even a heavy-duty tarp that is well secured might do the trick for the wet weather.
I live in a city apartment, so no pergola. However, I would add vines across the top, and up the "stays," even if the trees provided the shade.

My parents' home had a courtyard in the front covered with bleached white seashells, stepping stones, shrubbery, a fountain, chairs and a pergola. Once the vines grew in there was adequate shade. I wouldn't sit out there in the rain, though. The biggest problem was little spiders that lived in the vines. They had a habit of ending up on my hair or shoulders. I told them to stay in the vines, but they didn't listen.
I think the main point is that it looks nice.

Why not build something with a permanent roof cover?

The pictures show that they do provide some shade … and they look nice even without the vines etc.!

The pictures show that they do provide some shade … and they look nice even without the vines etc.! "Some shade" !!! I guess it cuts down the sunshine a little. And you can still look up and see the sky. But not complete shade cover, and no cover from the rain.

movielikerWho sits outside at a table when it's raining ? If there is a cover from the rain, they do. Nobody runs inside from a covered patio unless it's a violent storm. And many pergolas are used as entrances and exits from doorways (as in your posted pictures). Somewhere to stand waiting for the rain to stop, waiting for their car, toweling off before going inside, etc.

movielikerI don't have a pergola. I had to look up what a "pergola" is. I see shade in the pictures. I go inside when it is raining and there is no roof over the table and chairs.

I would rather have a covered patio. That gives me complete cover from the sun. And complete cover from the rain. Pergolas make no sense to me. They're stupid.

Yeah I didn't like that character in Lord of the Rings either. Legolas was always too perfect. The long blonde hair. The perfect aim with the bow and arrow. The pointy ears...
What? PERgolas! OH!
...never mind...

Somehow that picture seems cricket related ...is there a story that goes with it ? The rain came down at the beginning of Diner en Blanc, a gathering of about 1,200 people all dressed in white with picnic baskets, tables and chairs, who descended on Louise McKinney Park in Edmonton, July 17, 2014. This international trend started 25 years ago in Paris.
