Do pregnant animals understand that they're pregnant? Especially first timers. Do they just think something weird is going on, something is moving around in their belly and it kinda freaks them out. I don't know, just a thought.

I've seen mother cats give birth. They immediately know what to do when the babies pop out, they clean them up and let them suckle. They're not shocked. It's all instinct. Not only that, but they plan ahead, scoping out a secluded, secure spot for the event when left to their own devices. The instinctual behaviors evolution confers are quite impressive, and become even more so when considering how poorly they're employed by many among a particular species supposedly more evolved.
