Lacaster managed to continue doing quality projects regardless even as he aged as well.

The way to keep that control is not to need money. Lawrence Olivier and Peter OToole , two of the finest actors of the twentieth century, ended their careers taking any project that paid well enough, because they wanted to leave a good nest egg for children.

Lacaster managed to continue doing quality projects regardless even as he aged as well. Lancaster was always looking to balance and alternate between very commercial projects that traded on his athleticism and good looks with films that strived to be more substantive and thoughtful.
In this way, I think Tom Cruise has followed the Lancaster model.

but not really? Cruise really hasn't maintained being able to find any noteworthy roles outside of action roles to sustain himself at all. Even American Made is more a movie star performance then anything more depth worthy. I'd say Dicaprio feels more like such a model.

Here's a list of Cruise films that don't take the action route, but rather fit the striving "to be more substantive and thoughtful" profile: The Color Of Money, Rain Man, Born on the 4th of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Vanilla Sky, Lions For Lambs, Valkyrie.

but within the last decade all he has done are action movies, so no not really, Lancaster managed to continue well past the ripe age of 60 starring in pretty quality projects. All of the movies you list of Cruise, still where completed when he was fairly young, but right now Cruise seems to be fighting against aging.

Well, since we don't know what films Cruise will make when he's well past the ripe age of 60, it's much too soon to know how he will compare with Lancaster at that age. But his films during his prime (and there's 22 years between Color of Money and Valkyrie) show that he, like Lancaster, toggled between the "fun" films and the "serious" ones.

Airport still got nominated for and won an oscar and was hugely successful, I am not a great fan of it whatsoever, but there was prestige there to be found. As for Scorpio Killer, forgetting that Lancaster still had Conversation Piece and Cassandra Crossing., so yeah I do feel that, American Made was charming but a bit of fluff.

Cruise and Lancaster are too radically different types.
Lancaster came out of the studio star system- a combination of athletic and eccentric--Errol Flynn leading man and Mickey Rooney character actor.
Cruise DOES NOT have the range. He was a teen role actor who did a few serious parts but he is shoehorned into roles he is not suited for just like DiCaprio is.
Cruise is a good example of downsizing of Hollywood and the negatives caused by them wanting to get away from the old fashioned 6'2 leading men (Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Vincent Price, etc).
Bogart was the same height as Cruise but he was not doing swashbucklers or CGI-assisted action man roles. He knew his range. Cruise doesn't, or he is forced into roles due to the limited offers. Maybe if the international film industry that Lancaster was employed in still existed Cruise could find some more interesting roles, but he is really limited. He doesn't have the gravitas.
The Lancaster role that I knew him first for was Dr. Moreau and I see that was an AIP film.

It's remarkable how he managed to avoid the rockbottom of a few other actors like Olivier. It was cool seeing him and Poitier in Separate But Equal.

I think his assuredness, command and sincerity played a part. He didn't suffer fools gladly because he believed very much in the power of art to uplift the psyche and tap the senses. He responded well to being in the company of artists and creative people with vision.
