While I don’t think it is likely these cases are linked personally, I was wondering if anyone else immediately thought about these two cases due to their proximity and the very strange nature of them.
A recent podcast episode of unresolved covered the i65/days inn murders, which were the murders of night managers at two Days inn hotels which were 50 miles apart on the same day in 1989.
Victims Peggy Gill and Jeanne Gilbert were both sexually assaulted and shot, although Gilbert’s body was a little further from the hotel while Gill’s was left in the parking lot.
These two attacks were quickly linked and in 2010, Gill and Gilbert’s cases were linked with the 1987 murder of Vicki Heath. Heath was also a hotel employee in Kentucky which was located just off interstate i65.
In 1990, dna linked another case but this time fortunately the victim survived and again the event happened on i65 and in 1991 another survivor of an attack was linked but this time in Rochester Minnesota, which is not on i65.
Other info I65 runs north to south through Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana and intersects i70 in Indiana.
Confirmed attacks involved different weapons including .22 for the 1989 murders and a .38 for the attack of Heath.
I am sure it’s a total long shot but at first hearing of the i65 murders, I immediately looked up the proximity to the i70 murders, which was a series of shop employees killed by a man along the i70 highway which runs east to west through a number of states but includes Indiana and in fact the i65 and i70 intersect in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The i70 murders took place in 1992 from April 8, 1992 through May 7th 1992. The descriptions of the two suspects are close but not identical, like the I65 murders small amounts of cash were taken but unlike the prior mentioned crimes the i70 murders did not involve sexual assaults.
Also the i70 murders involved a .22 caliber weapon like the two days inn murders(admittedly a super common caliber).
Descriptions I65 killer- 35-45 years old at time of the crime 5’10-6’0 ft. Brown hair but some with some red and some gray. Big beard. And green eyes and had a lazy or glass eye
I70 killer- 35-45 yrs old at time if crime. 5’8-6’0 ft tall. Reddish hair, no beard, high forehead and lazy eyelids. Neatly dressed but according to eyewitnesses seemed mentally ill and or talking to self etc.
The MO going from sexual assaults to the later crimes not including sexual assault seems unlikely to me. If any bring an escalation would go the other way.
