[Scroll to my third post for a huge update]
The case of missing siblings Tylee Ryan (17) and Joshua Vallow (7), last seen on September 23, 2019.
On July 11, 2019, Lori Vallow's estranged husband, Charles Vallow, came to her home to pick up his son. After an argument, Lori's brother, Alex Cox, shot and killed Charles. Cox claimed that he acted in self-defense. (Interestingly, 17-year-old Tylee's father, Joseph Anthony Ryan, had died in 2018 of a heart attack, making Charles the second ex-husband of Lori to die.) Lori, who in recent years had become convinced that she was "assigned by God" to prepare people for the Second Coming, left her Arizona home in September, telling people that she was leaving for a job in another state. In reality, she'd moved to Idaho to be with Chad Daybell, who has reportedly written about doomsday prophecies. Daybell was married, but his wife died in October under suspicious circumstances. Just weeks later, Lori and Chad got married. It was about this time when the whereabouts of the children came into question. Lori and Chad told people in Idaho conflicting stories: one story was that she had a daughter, but the daughter had died a years before; another story was that she had no children at all.
While investigating the death of Dayebell's wife, which was initially believed to be due to natural causes, police learned that Lori had children. When questioned about the children, she claimed they were back in Arizona. Police believed this was a lie, but when they showed up at the newlywed couple's home to do a welfare check on the kids, both Lori and Chad were gone. Police went on to search a storage unit that Lori had rented, and they found it packed with the children's clothes and photographs. Security video revealed that Lori and her brother, Alex Cox (who, you'll recall, shot and killed her estranged brother in July), had visited the storage unit several times together. Unfortunately, Cox can't be questioned anymore because he died in December. (Police are still awaiting toxicology results to determine a cause of death.)
Bother Lori and Chad were located in Hawaii on January 27, 2020, with no sign that the children had ever been there with them. Lori was ordered to "physically produce the children" within five days, a deadline that she missed. At this time it is unclear what the next step is for law enforcement.
