In the UK. Wasn’t released in the US until June 1.
Their second best right behind Paranoid, imo. One of the few albums I would consider “perfect.”

Strange to think that heavy metal is almost 50 years old. It still has one of the strongest underground scenes in music with an insanely passionate fanbase, probably more so than any other genre I've been into.

Most people usually say The Kinks, The Beatles "Helter Skelter" or something else started the genre. I'd go with 21st Century Schitzoid Man, but it's one of those things to be argued back and forth forever. Edit...Page with the Yardbirds?

Here's a comprehensive video that, IMO, does an excellent job documenting how metal came to be. Before Black Sabbath: How Psychedelic Rock Became Metal

Defining the edges/beginning of genres is an exercise in arbitrariness and futility. I'm content with saying that Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Purple were the true beginning of heavy metal and that there were germinal examples before them (Helter Skelter and 21st Century Schizoid Man among them). But with Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Purple you basically had all the ingredients of what would profoundly influence all future metal bands. Sabbath was perhaps the most important band of that trio because they provided the dark/evil aesthetic that was practically unheard of at the time (though even with that there were influences like Coven), while Zeppelin and Purple were more logical extensions of what was going on in the late 60s.
