Bizarrely brilliant, delightfully opaque and weird, sadly no more since M.E.S.'s death.

A brilliant, one of a kind band. For the longest time was only familiar with them up to about Extricate [1990]. Have recently started exploring more of their work. Still don't think anything will quite match their 80s peak though.
Love this description of M.E.S's vocal/lyrical style:
A kind of Northern English magic realism that mixed industrial grime with the unearthly and uncanny, voiced through a unique, one-note delivery somewhere between amphetamine-spiked rant and alcohol-addled yarn. - critic Simon Reynolds
Probably my favorite track of theirs:
A more recent discovery (for me) which holds up (from the early 90s):

Agree, the 80's line up of MES , the Hanley brothers, Brix and Burns probably the peak, but must recommend later albums Fall Heads Roll and Remit. Check them out on YouTube. Also Brix and the Hanley's are releasing albums under the name Brix and The Extricated, absolutely brilliant 80's style stuff also on YouTube to sample.

Wasn't there some sort of controversy to the effect that the lead singer murdered someone?

My favourite period was the three album run of The Frenz Experiment, I Am Kurious Oranj and Extricate, though there is plenty of great stuff either side of those.
They also must be one of the best covers bands ever...can't think of one they did that was below par

Hex Enduction Hour is the greatest album of the 1980s.
Anywho, here is the Mark E. Smith guide to writing guide.

One of the all time great bands. Mark E. Smith will be missed. Thankfully, he/they left behind one hell of a back catalog.
