Marc Lawrence, born February 17, 1910, died November 27, 2005 (95 years old). An actor of range who, because of his acne scarred face, usually ended up playing a gangster of some sort, even though Lawrence could ring variations on the type. During the Hollywood Red Scare, Lawrence admitted to be a former member of the Communist Party. Even though he Named Names, he was blacklisted and had to flee to Europe to continue working in the movie business. From the IMDb: Columbia Pictures chief Harry Cohn once told Lawrence that Johnny Roselli, a notorious gangster, had said that he was the best hood in films. Lawrence himself was often told by Italian hoods in his native New York that he played them better than anyone else; ironically, Lawrence was Jewish. The brutal fight scene with Gary Cooper in Fritz Lang’s “Cloak and Dagger” (1946) “Key Largo” (1948) – between Thomas Gomez and Edward G. Robinson An important role for Lawrence was as Cobby, in “The Asphalt Jungle” (1950), the reluctant low-level book-maker who had to shelter the men planning the big caper. Lawrence was a familiar face on TV from the 1950s thru his last acting job on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” in 1999.

Thanks, Mike -- good post.
Even in Westerns Marc acted like a gangster -- whipping up the lynch mob in OX-BOW INCIDENT.
As the organizing hood in ASPHALT JUNGLE was another good one.
And one of the guys who made Dustin's life miserable in MARATHON MAN.

He also co-directed a movie or two- NIGHTMARE IN THE SUN with John Derek.
The last thing I saw him in one was a Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode-and most recently THE KREMLIN LETTER.

Thanks, I had not seen that before. Wow! Best fight I have seen in a movie. Not sure I am tempted to invest in the film as a whole, though, despite its being by Fritz Lang including the lovely Lilli Palmer.

He also co-directed a movie or two- NIGHTMARE IN THE SUN with John Derek. In our "hitchhiker" thread I wrote this: Nightmare in the Sun (1965) directed by John Derek and Marc Lawrence features John Derek being framed by the bent sheriff (Aldo Ray) of a desert town. Although Derek is only seen hitchhiking in the opening scenes (in a truck driven by Sammy Davis Jr), he is never identified by name, just as "The Hitchhiker" in the cast list, so it merits inclusion here. He does get a lift from Ursula Andress soon after, but he does not solicit it. She solicits him. This is a bad movie, but with a lot of talking points so I may write separately about it later.(Which I never did). It is available on YouTube for those who may be interested.
