For those unfamiliar, the Wrecking Crew were a bunch of studio musicians in LA in the 60's and 70's. Studio musicians, surely not. But they made the music in a boatload of iconic tunes. Most of Phil Spector's talent, the post surfing Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, hell Frank Zappa. They were studio musicians and, for the most part, played the sheet music that was put in front of them. But the sheer volume of epic music that they made should be acknowledged. And if you concentrate on the background music, it's pretty damned good. Beach Boys Good Vibrations, Ike and Tina's River Deep, Mountain High, Mamas & Papas California Dreaming. A couple are familiar names, Leon Russell, Glen Campbell. Bassist Carol Kaye is named by a lot of players as one of the greatest.

Probably, and the Funk Brothers, too.

Probably, and the Funk Brothers, too. Definitely the Funk Brothers also. They played on a lot of non Motown songs. And the Wrecking Crew played for Smokey Robinson. Yeah neither had an album of their own but there are many in the Hall who have done a lot less

Carol Kaye would likely oppose it as she dislikes the name "Wrecking Crew". She insists there were too many people working those sessions to be considered a group and the name is used to sell the eponymous documentary.
Me? I'd vote them in. Same with the Swampers.
