I've heard/read many people say that it's acceptable for a teacher to date a student as long as it happens after the course has ended (no conflict of interest) and as long as they're both adults. Do you agree? Whatever your answer is, would your opinion change depending on how much time passes after the end of the course before they start dating? Would it change depending on whether the student was or not an adult when the course started? What about their interactions? I mean, would they be able to have romantic chemistry or is the teacher/student dynamic something that never goes away?

My best friend in college was one year older than me. He was exceedingly intelligent and sensitive. I remember when he knocked on my door in the middle of the night (he was one floor above me in the dorm, as he was a Sophomore and I was a Freshman) and told me he had just consummated a relationship with our Philosophy professor, a female 15 years older than him. He was so smitten and so vulnerable. This went on and off for a looong time, and he would get hurt and then go back. I liked the heck out of this lady(still do, can't help it) and really I was in reverence of her scope of view and level of intelligence, but I just can't help but feel like she used him.
But he was so lovable. He introduced me to Led Zeppelin and he would play the guitar for me in the middle of the night and sometimes I would put my head in his lap and we would talk. He really was an amazing individual. Where have you gone to, John Adam?

It's like a boss dating a former employee, a shopkeeper dating a former customer Not really. The dynamic between a teacher and a student is different, and as I said before, it can be hard to get pass that even after the course is over. Also, third parties would have doubts if the 2 people had already kissed or even flirted before making their relationship public. This wouldn't be that bad with the examples you gave, but again, with teachers and students it's different.

I don't know about romantic chemistry but I once ran into a teacher 10 or 12 years after she was my teacher. I was 21 or 22 at the time and I recognized her but she didn't recognize me. After we talked she remembered me. We laughed about it and agreed it was weird but we still went home together. The dynamic does go away.

Would it change depending on whether the student was or not an adult when the course started? As long as the teacher didn't have a calendar counting down the days until the student was legal.

As long as the teacher didn't have a calendar counting down the days until the student was legal. Does that happen? I didn't know.
