Then it might probably had kept some of the edge from the original film or even darker. Hell if Cameron was calling the shots, it could had been the Temple of Doom for the franchise.

But he was busy directing The Abyss at the time.

The second film had its dark moments I’m not sure where the “it’s way lighter” stuff comes from. Vigo the Carpathian is basically pure nightmare fuel

He would have drowned a rat in ecto-slime.
There would be a heavy-handed message about war and the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man.

The Ghostbusters would all have PTSD, and there'd be a hundred Stay-Puft Marshmallow Men.

Unusual choice of director for that sort of movie. Cameron only directed two part-comedies - Piranha II: The Spawning (a horror comedy) and True Lies (not true comedy, but with comedic elements). One was a disaster, the other a ton of fun.
I'm sure he would have done a good job with Ghostbusters II, but I'm mostly happy with how the movie turned out. Unpopular opinion, I know.

The last act is a masterclass in escalating tension and excitement. Louis Tully played by Bill Paxton. Sigourney Weaver still kicks ass. Arnie plays Vigo the Carpathian. Rated R.
