I consider this one of the most significant movies ever made. Not only was the first film directed by a black woman that went national it's an extremely unique and personal movie. Julie Dash gives us a very personal look at her family history. She helped develop a new language in movies going forward for black women. It was a very small budget and it took her over ten years to complete. I first saw this film when it came out almost 20 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it. With a few things that bothered me about it. After watching it again older and a different point in my life it took on a bigger, broader more personal note with me. The one thing that bothered me was that I wasn't always able to understand what was being said because of the heavy accent. I now realize that it doesn't matter what they're saying but the emotion behind it. It also transcends to everybody's family and the stories and traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. The film has a loose plot but the plot isn't what the movie is. It's about tradition and family stories and memories. Mostly it's about the emotion behind all of those. From the beginning to the final speech that brought some tears. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous. The use of colors and contrast is stunning. A movie not only be seen but a movie to be felt. Anybody else love this film?

Really appreciate your comments, opus. I regret to say (am ashamed to say, actually) that I haven't seen this highly regarded film. I remember that it was entered into the National Film Registry, which says a lot. I think TCM plays it now and again, so I'll keep an eye out for it and really make an effort to see it next time. It's important that films like this don't get lost. Telling part of your story or a families story ( America, America- Fanny and Alexander ) etc... is nothing new but the telling of this story is different Unique people, unique story and unique film making. I do think you would appreciate the style and the message that she's conveying.
