Fred Astaire. When he's in motion, I can't take my eyes off him. It took me some time, but I compiled a four hour video - all of Astaire's dance numbers from all of his musicals. It's just solid, unalloyed gold.

Just like you Autumn
Also GK danced wonderfully as always in a couple of films
with my all time favorite perfect lady dancer - Vera-Ellen .
Thanks so much Autumn for this wonderful subject post .

I am more of a Fred Astaire guy. But I am a Gene Kelly fan also. Donald O'connor is amazing though also. I will post my favorite Gene Kelly clip later on

Mr. Astaire. He made his dancing look so effortless and, when dancing with a partner, made it look like a love scene. Unlike Kelly, he didn't constantly grin directly into the camera as if in a perpetual state of self-congratulation.
Aside from his dancing, Mr. Astaire was underrated as a singer. In the Astaire-Rogers musicals, his breezy, elegant singing style did justice to a good lyric, unlike the crooners of the time who focused on their moaning more than the words of the songs.

For elegance and grace its Fred, but for pure physicality and genius its Gene.

I so agree on both points here BATouttaheck
both gentleman dancers are remarkable in their own unique styles indeed ( and that apples and oranges make an awesome fruit salad too ! ) .

love them both. Their dance styles were very different. Kelly also did a lot of choreography. Both were so damned talented a a pleasure to watch.

I think that's the difference, and a good way to describe Fred. He's more of a gentleman dancer, very elegant, suave. What I like about Kelly is how vibrant, powerful and athletic his choreography is. Frankly, it wows me, the amount of control and physicality, yet such precision, he is able to pull off.
I don't think I quite grew to fully appreciate Fred as much.

A very spot-on reply here too Autumn

Astaire, easily. Kelly had great energy, of course, but I have honestly never found him a particularly engaging personality on screen. Fred had such a twinkle in his eye and a way with the quips that never fails to enchant.

Oh right Danny Kaye. I will have to check out some of his movies. I believe I saw those dance scenes though. I don't know why I have not watched his movies. I remember thinking about it when I was trying to record a whole bunch of musicals from tv but I just never did. But it is never too late because they show musicals on cable a lot. Well I will not post a gif, but I will give you the actual video. By the way I just watched the whole Moses supposes number just now for the first time in years and I would rank that as my top favorite along with this one: While we're at it I also really dig this Donald O'Connor number along with Debbie Reynolds

Love that slick move at the 3:38 mark where he does a move and spins around and shakes the guy's hand

Well I can't choose...
From Ziegfeld Follies 1945.
I think they took a few dance steps together too as the presenters of That's Entertainment, Part II 1976
