Harvey Weinstein spent his 68th birthday in prison on Thursday with gifts from state correctional officers that included a pamphlet about sexual abuse behind bars and an informational video about preventing prison suicide.
The materials are given to all new inmates like the Hollywood titan-turned-convicted rapist, who on Wednesday was transported to the upstate Wende Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison outside Buffalo.
On his first day, Weinstein was required to receive a pamphlet titled “The Prevention of Sexual Abuse in Prison; What Inmates Need to Know,” according to a state corrections directive.
The Oscar winner will also have been required to view a video on the topic titled “Abuse Behind the Walls; An Orientation,” according to the document.
State prison officials keep records ensuring each new inmate has received the pamphlet and watched the video on their first day in lockup.
A security supervisor will have then assessed him for his “risk of being sexually abused by other inmates or sexually abusive toward other inmates,” according to the directive.
Weinstein will have then been required to watch yet another informational video, this one about how prisoners should avoid killing themselves behind bars.
The video, “Suicide Prevention for People in Prison,” is intended for inmates to keep with them for the remainder of their stay.
Located in Alden, Erie County, the Wende facility is known for its sex-offender treatment program, which the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision may mandate for Weinstein, according to his prison consultant, Craig Rothfeld.
For now, Rothfeld said, Weinstein has been placed in a medical unit there due to his failing health and the coronavirus outbreak.
“DOCCS is doing their best effort to protect inmates and not bring in COVID-19. Wende has no confirmed cases at the moment,” Rothfeld said.
Regional medical units at New York state prisons are typically reserved for inmates recovering from surgery or with chronic and life-threatening illnesses.
The units, similar to a hospital ward, feature single-occupancy or two-person shared rooms. Inmates receive medical care from DOCCS medical staff.

Visitors are currently barred from the facility due to the virus outbreak, but Weinstein will be eligible for daily visits once they resume, Rothfeld said.
It’s unclear whether Weinstein will serve his entire 23-year sentence at Wende or be moved after his reception process.
“Each individual sentenced to a period of incarceration in a state correctional facility is evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine which DOCCS facility meets his or her security, medical, mental health and other needs,” a department rep said.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison last week for raping an actress and sexually abusing a production assistant. He was moved to Wende after a short stay on Rikers Island.
