Manu Dibango died in Paris after catching Covid-19.
His rise to international stardom is an interesting one.
A New York DJ, by the name of David Mancuso, used to host private parties in his loft home, called Loves Saves The Day. In 1973, Mancuso found an import in Brooklyn of Manu Dibango's, 'Soul Makossa'. He played it out at one of his parties, and people went ape, and scoured NYC for another copy of this record. As a result, a band called 'Afrique' covered it, and it leapt onto the pop charts without radio airplay. Atlantic quickly licensed Dibango's record, and the two versions battled it out, until Dibango's eventually climbed higher, peaking at 35.
It's generally regarded as one of the first disco tracks
