1. Yes, definitely. It’s odd, it took me forever to get around to seeing this, and when I finally did I thought, Huh, that was fine, but it wasn’t that scary or great or anything. It was just OK. Yet it stayed in the back of my mind, and after a few months I thought I might as well watch it again—and it got me. Many people have had that happen with this movie, apparently: something about it is oddly haunting, in the metaphorical sense. I’ve only seen a few movies that seem on first watch like clear genre movies but have hidden mysteries lurking throughout them that haunt the viewer: two others are Laura and Vertigo.
2. Hmm… Offhand, the first scene with Lloyd. Weird choice, but something about it is terrifying and captivating at once, yet they’re not doing much of anything but talking (well, Lloyd’s pouring and Jack’s drinking, too, OK). All the dialogue in this movie, pointedly, doesn’t solve any mysteries; it worsens the mysteries, or raises new ones (“Charles Grady” turns into “Delbert Grady”). Other choices would be the dialogue with Grady in that psychotic red bathroom, the dialogue with the mysteriously threatening Ullman (and the just-plain-mysterious Bill Watson) in that impossible office, and the beautifully suspenseful and disturbing Room 237 bathroom sequence.
3. Scatman Crothers’ Hallorann, who is (purposely) the only person to give a naturalistic performance in the thing and who gets an ax through the chest for the trouble.

When the camera is behind Danny as it follows him riding around on his three wheeler. That looks like fun and I love it when the sound changes of him going from carpet to hardwood. 3. Dick
