Today is the 50th Anniversary of First Avenue night club in Minneapolis Minnesota. Famous for being featured in the film Purple Rain. Joe Cocker was the first artist to perform at the club on April 3rd 1970.

That's a great landmark. Did you ever go there? I've only seen footage of bands playing there, but it's a club with a formidable reputation. Would have liked to have seen Babes In Toyland there.

petrolino I have seen about 20 shows at First Avenue. This was between 2001 and 2010. I haven't been to many shows since. If I remember right it holds about 2000 people. The most packed show I saw there was when Zwan kicked off their US tour. Zwan was Billy Corgan's short lived side project. A little fun fact: I don't know if it has since changed, but there was never any doors on the bathroom stalls.

I like Zwan and Smashing Pumpkins too. The Pumpkins used to play the Empty Bottle in Illinois. The Pumpkins got involved with the Chicago Independent Venues League (CIVL) which I think was put together to protect indie clubs from greedy real estate developers and the like. Nowadays, many face extinction, so I'm glad First Avenue's still fighting the good fight.

I did, a couple times! I was never into them (they were warming up for the bands I was there to see), but the experiences were fun.

Who was your favourite band you saw there?

Who was your favourite band you saw there? The Cramps gave the best live shows of any band I ever saw there and I got to see about four performances. When they did Surfin' Bird the audience would go insane.
