Scott Peterson killing his pregnant wife Lacy That was in my region. You?? Stanley Tippett, a convicted child rapist, is the #1 suspect in the rape & murder of a girl who lived approximately 4 miles south of where I used to live.

There was a girl raped and killed about half a mile up the road. They used to put flowers to remember her for a few years. I don't think the perpetrator was famous but I think he had been released from prison recently (the ol "you can rehabilitate murderers" claim-which I have to wonder might be a tad exaggerated).
There was a guy from India who was randomly shooting at people in the area and he killed a young guy waiting for a bus.
And a Taiwanese guy murdered his entire family due to a debt he had (shamed his family)--his youngest son lived because the mother shoved him out the door before he could get to him and the father shot himself.
I stopped following the local news but I bet we have had some doozy murders in recent years (and my city-town isn't very big).

The Brittany Drexell case. In recent years it's assumed she was taken to a stash house and raped and murdered. Her remains fed to Gators. But no real proof as far as I know. Update! They did find her remains and her killer.
The Heather Elvis case... Still no sign of Heather.
A Father and Son were shot to death at their Bingo parlor not too far away. Very sad.
Also a case of a man who got shot while getting the mail. It was covered in the new "Forensic files" episode called "The Ambush". I can't remember his name tho. Happened not too far away from me.
I'm sure there are probably other high profile cases I'm forgetting. It being a transient town people tend to go missing.
