Both opened the same week in 1980. At least Luke was rescued from the cold by Han. No such luck for Jack.

Empire officially opened a week later to the source I checked on IMDB, 20th June. It would have taken some steam away from The Shining and being R rated, it had a bigger hurdle. They opened The Thing and Blade Runner together in 82' and both did below average box office, both R rated and both big budgeted. Also films around this time were still in the shadow of E.T. Not a good idea. They could have saved The Thing for October. It could have boosted BR a bit and The Thing was ideal for the month of Halloween. I also see May 21s as its release date.

I remember seeing them both on their opening weekends, I was a mere young lad of fifteen. Saw The Shining at a midnight show with a couple of girlfriends, after seeing that the drive home on empty streets was a trip.
