I am not that familiar with this franchise besides First Blood, though I have seen the other movies.
Did they basically just make a Taken remake with Sylvester Stallone and name his character John Rambo?

I enjoyed it but as a Rambo film its not that good. Its not in the same spirit as the first 4, Its a different kind of action film.

Well, the movie stays true to his character, as he's still a booby trapping vet with plot convenient PTSD. But instead of throwing him into a war conflict, it's just a revenge movie.
Take John Rambo, stick him into Taken by way of Sicario, and tack on the third act of Skyfall = Last Blood.

It’s an odd movie although enjoyable. It’s kind of distant from the other movies as its own thing, although I guess it’s suppose to follow the last one with him at the farm.
Yeah, the movie is fun the first time, but I haven’t watched it since and already I’m starting to like it a bit less.

I agree that his character still acts like John Rambo, but the movie itself doesn't feel at all like a Rambo movie and why is he living on a ranch and wearing a cowboy hat? The only thing that feels like Rambo is that he still has his issues and is going on a killing rampage. I am sure this is talked about in the other movies, but when did he have a this normal looking life where there are pictures of him on the wall where he is young with his niece taking horse riding lessons and stuff? I have never been a fan besides First Blood, but this version is awful imo.

At least with the other sequels there is a sense of adventure to them.

Part of the problem is no Trautman, no Jerry Goldsmith score and "It's a Long Road" theme, no bandana and machine guns, etc.

Could’ve benefited from being more self-aware, although I know it’s trying to be the FINAL film so it has to have some gravitas. I mostly enjoyed it for the third act and how gory it got in certain parts.

The movie is on autopilot the entire time, is very similar to a bunch of other movies, doesn't feel like a Rambo movie, is depressing and grotesque in a more vile way than the other movies in the franchise and the filmmaking is generic. Nothing even happens until the final 25 minutes. I dislike all the sequels, but this movie is much more aggressively bad then the other sequels.

In my opinion, of they'd named the character something else, nobody would have thought, "Hey, this shoulda been a Rambo movie".

I assumed they were trying to change things up for the series, even if they just cherrypicked elements from other films. I like it at least more than III. I actually like all of the films, yes I said that. But I would agree that the original is far and away the best one.

They were definitely trying to change things up and I can appreciate that, but they did it in the laziest way possible.
