I haven't seen the definitive Macbeth yet in movies or on TV. The 1979 BBC production "A Performance of Macbeth" is good and worthy to be watched. Ian McKellen is the noble Thane who is tempted into murder, but what is so outstanding is the Lady Macbeth of Judi Dench. Also, if you pay attention, you can see Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars (actor Ian McDiarmid) who scores as the Porter in the famous comedy interruption that comes between the King’s murder and its discovery. Can be seen on YouTube.
For a time during the Settle In Place requirement, the Folger Shakespeare Library was free streaming an excellent video of a staging at the library. There are no "names" in the cast but all the players are experienced American actors. Teller (of Penn and Teller) was a co-director and incorporates a couple of nice illusions that are performed on stage by the actors during some of the supernatural scenes. Don't know if it is still available but is worth looking up.
Here are but a few of the words and phrases that “Macbeth” added to the English language that are still commonly heard:
Assassination (the first known instance of this word) Be-all, end-all There’s no such thing T’was a rough night What’s done is done One fell swoop Lily-livered Even handed justice The moon is down He could not miss ‘em This is a sorry sight The livelong night Go the primrose way

I'd rank Stewart, Williamson, and Fassbender next after Mckellen.

I'd rank Stewart, Williamson, and Fassbender next after Mckellen. I really need to see the Patrick Stewart Macbeth. He is the best King Claudius ever in the David Tennant Hamlet. I didn't much care for the Justin Kurzel movie with Michael Fassbender. It is valuable just for the visuals but whatever is left of the text is usually whispered into thick black beards. Maybe Kurzel should have told the story without any dialog. That might have been interesting. Both Fassbender and Marion Cotillard have a decent Macbeth and Lady in them that I hope to see some day.
