I haven't seen it in a long time, but based on how I categorize that sounds about right.
I consider Michael Douglas supporting in Wall Street for example.

I asked that about The Godfather. Brando won Best Actor but the lead character is really Michael. To answer your question, I’d say Wilder is the lead. Charlie becomes a supporting character in his own movie once the tour starts.

Lead.along with Peter Ostrum. He shows up quite late, but dominates the show from them onwards, and Wonka’s golden ticket contest ‘leads’ the story even to that point.
Surprisingly, according to the website screentimecentral which times such things, Wilder has more screen time than Jack Albertson.

Based on that information he sounds like lead.

Based on screen time, I'd say Gene Wilder is supporting, and Charlie is lead.
Just like Pacino is lead in The Godfather, and Brando is supporting (if you go by screen time).

Based on that information he sounds like lead. It’s a questionable one so you’re not necessarily wrong. My usual standard is that if it’s a debatable case, go lead.

I've only seen it once, but I put him supporting. From what I remember he doesn't show up until around the halfway point.

Out of curiosity I just checked and the movie is about 1 hour and 40 minutes and Wilder shows up at the 44 minute mark. That's supporting in my book.
