Amazing movie and my best picture win of 1970, edging out perhaps Informer

As you say, a very good film which does not get mentioned much these days. Thanks for reminding us about it.

Thanks for the recommendations. It's the next one on my list of the Best Foreign Language Films. I had not realized, but it won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. At least one of our regulars here cannot be bothered with sub-titles. He will be pleased to know that Columbia released an English dubbed version in the USA.

I'd like to see three films directed by Elio Petri that are often considered a political trilogy ("trilogy of neurosis") : 'Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion' (1970), 'The Working Class Goes To Heaven' (1971) & 'Property Is No Longer A Theft' (1973). I always put this off because I'm convinced they will at some point receive nice dvd / blu-ray releases, newly restored with extras, but this never seems to happen. So I should probably look for them all on their separate dvd releases that are still available.
Despite making relatively few feature films himself, all of which were released in the 1960s & 1970s, Petri directed some of Italy's most prominent actors, including Gian Maria Volonte, Alberto Sordi, Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Nino Manfredi, Lando Buzzanca, Franco Nero and Giancarlo Giannini.

There is a Criterion edition with knobs on in Blu Ray and DVD. If you buy it for the Blu Ray, do not bin the DVD version, just mail it me.
DUAL-FORMAT BLU-RAY AND DVD SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
New 4K digital restoration by the Film Foundation, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Archival interview with director Elio Petri, conducted by critic and filmmaker Alexandre Astruc
Elio Petri: Notes About a Filmmaker (2005), a ninety-minute documentary on the director’s career, featuring interviews with friends, collaborators, and filmmakers
New interview with film scholar Camilla Zamboni
Investigation of a Citizen Named Volonté (2008), a fifty-minute documentary about actor Gian Maria Volonté
Music in His Blood, an interview with composer Ennio Morricone from 2010, conducted by film critic Fabio Ferzetti
Trailers
New English subtitle translation
One Blu-ray and two DVDs, with all content available in both formatsI suspect this first of the trilogy is so honored because an Oscar winner and the other two will remain out of luck. Maybe they are not as good anyway?

You can get all three but they are often pricey, and it's best to check descriptions carefully if you're buying international editions and require subtitles. It's also about the picture quality (ideally not a foggy VHS transfer) and making sure it's uncut (running times often vary on international editions of 1970s films, but there are sites you can check for details). If one of these titles is deleted, you can still usually pick titles like these up on e-bay if you're willing to pay what it takes, or just shop around on Amazon for trusted sellers with high ratings.
I think Amazon Italy has currently removed much of its usual film stock due to the pandemic, but expect those titles to be relisted in future.

"Investigation..." is pretty good, but I'd recommend the 2nd of the trilogy...
Lulu the Tool (1971) La classe operaia va in paradiso (original title) 9/10
I LOVED it.. It was very inspiring, too...

I'm really keen to see them all, they've long been high on my "to-see" list, and I'd watch anything directed by Elio Petri. I've seen several films Petri made in the 1960s and pretty much enjoyed them all.

I got the film but it only had subtitles-I only do that when absolutely necessary.
