I think that they would be worse on a very small screen but on a large enough screen it wouldn't matter so much.

I remember music videos in the past using the "fish eye lens" to project shots in a circular fashion.

I guess so.
I think the earliest silent films tended to have a circular image with blackness filling up the rims.
