Besides the fact it's about a killer robot that trying to stop the future leader of the Resistance, it also has very similar story beats as well, right down to the bad guy being killed in an industrial setting. I think it largely gets away with it because of the performances and action.

No.
It follows a similar story and has some major things in common that you pointed out, but it is largely it's own movie and builds on the first movie perfectly imo.

Well, no. Lots of sequels have similar beats to their predecessor, it’s just about what they do with it that makes itself different.

Nobody is saying they are the same movie, but an argument can be made that Die Hard 2 is just Die Hard in an airport. With The Terminator there is an overarching story that both T2 and even T3 can build on. The problem with T3 though is that they stopped the future war from happening in T2 and so T3 has to make this dumb "the war is inevitable" nonsense for the movie to even have a point, which in return makes the ending of T2 feel pointless.

That never seemed to bother me, but I get what you mean. A lot of people say T3 is basically a remake of 2, while we’re on the topic. And I’m not gonna lie, it kind of is, as much as I do enjoy T3.

And I’m not gonna lie, it kind of is, as much as I do enjoy T3 I didn't say it bothers me. It depends on how well it does it and how similar it is to the original. Mad Max: Fury Road is a terrific action movie and my favorite movie in the franchise, but it is essentially just a reboot of the OT. T3 isn't particularly well written and it isn't well made imo. One of the greatest assets of T2 is that it uses humor effectively. T3 does not. The scene where the psychiatrist just randomly shows up for a joke is the perfect example of this. It feels more like a parody of T2.

Aliens is a remake of Alien in a sense--it also ends with the alien being blown into space.
And instead of Ripley fussing about a cat, she fusses about a newt.

Did you know Alien is basically a remake/ripoff of a 1950s b-movie? Yeah, and from what I hear Alien is vastly superior. What is your point? The OP is addressing the specific issue of a sequel being too similar to the original, not commenting on movies ripping-off other movies in general.

But ALIEN at least came up with a new design. Giger was annoyed with Cameron that he just did his own version of the Giger alien.

That is interesting. I think if people were able see every movie ever made they would realize that there are very few completely original movies out there. Even the classic era westerns and film noir movies were very similar to other ones. Sergio Leone made a name for himself by basically "ripping-off" another movie.

Did you know Alien is basically a remake/ripoff of a 1950s b-movie? There are other ideas in sci fi that have been reworked several times over. Like the android man who comes back to life to fight crime idea. There's Astro Boy, Cyborg 009, The 6 Million Dollar Man, Robocop, and Inspector Gadget.

There's so many that it's hard to remember them all.
