I like them both and for different reasons. A dog will love you unconditionally and is always happy to see you. A dog is like a very young child, full of joy, wonder and loves to run around, no matter how old. A dog is easy to train. A dog wants to be with you, and doesn't really care about its surroundings. A dog will eat just about ANYthing. And a dog is a LOT of work compared to a cat. A cat lets you know exactly how it's feeling. There is no mystery in deciphering it's moods. Cats DO have personalities, and are a lot of fun. But when a cat wants to be left alone, leave it alone. It is possible to train a cat, but it take a LOT of time, patience, and you are more successful training a male than a female. A cat is particular about what it eats. Although a cat loves you, it's more comfortable in it's home surroundings and doesn't like to travel (most don't, but there are rare exceptions. I had a male cat when I was in my early 20's who loved to take walks with me. No leash. He was a lot like a dog!). They both take a lot of commitment and love. And to anyone with a heart and a lick of compassion for a living being, other than themselves, you can't be around these lively creatures with the soulful eyes, their unconditional love, their consistent affection (shown in their own unique way) and love for you no matter what. They forgive us our morning breath and silly hair, and when we burn the eggs. They're always excited to see us come home. The list goes on....

I am a dog person. Their eyes make me feel more human than watching any human being. Dogs. I like some cats, especially laid back ones who will sit in your lap while your scratch the back of their neck and who do not hiss or bite you when you are showing affection. What I think I love most about dogs is that it is so easy to project every drop of sentiment in your being onto your canine companion.

I'm a cat person. The only dogs I like are smaller dogs like beagles or bassets. I dislike giant dogs and tiny, yappy dogs.

I am more of a dog person.
Father doesn't like cats. My brother and his family had 3 cats. The one cat who is no longer here - I think he knew my father doesn't like cats. One time, he jumped right up on his legs. Another time, it looked as he was going to pounce on me. However, my brother said to gently push his feet away, and the cat will take the hint. I did, and he did. Brother apologized that I had to do that. Heck, I was sorry I had to do that.
Meanwhile, my niece asked me why I don't like cats. I explained that it's not that I don't like cats - it's just that I'm allergic to the cat hair.
Another amusing cat story:
When I was home for the summer, one Saturday night, I went to the city to see some of my friends that I hardly ever get to see - primarily because I was working throughout the summer. It was a rare Saturday night that I was off. Friends have a cat. I was sitting on the couch. I'm thinking the cat was thinking....OOH! New lap to curl up in! So, not thinking at the time, it stops on my lap, and curls up. Meanwhile, I was saying....UHHH......NO! However, it had a little cat nap on my lap for a good 45 minutes.

Two of my best friends have cats, so before I visit them, I take an anti-histamine pill. They also try and vacuum all the cat hair away as best they can. They are good friends.

That's what I've had to do when visiting my brother (take a Claritin). One time, I didn't...and it didn't play out very well.
And, when we (father and I) leave, my brother runs the lint remover over both of us - just so we don't track any cat hair home with us.

It's hard being allergic to cats when you love them so much and just want to cuddle them.

Dogs! Cats are ok, but I've never had one as a pet. I have two dogs.

Right now, I'm not very fond of a particular cat. Not the cat's fault, mind you. Cat's just being a cat. But nutty lady next door lets her cat out loose and she (the cat, not the lady) likes my yard best (as did the cat before her who came to mysterious ends). She perches herself in my backyard or side yard and when I walk the dog, looks at me as if it's ME who has the nerve to encroach on HER territory... lol
See? Just a cat totally being a cat. But I don't want my doggy getting hurt trying to chase a neurotic cat scampering around.

What I think I love most about dogs is that it is so easy to project every drop of sentiment in your being onto your canine companion. I found I had no issue doing that with my feline companion when I had him. At night when I went to bed, I would just pick him up, sling him over my shoulder like a baby where he would stay and off-load him onto the bed. He'd then curl up right next to me and as soon as I projected a heart and mind sentiment of appreciation, love and respect for his little being, his purrer would kick in immediately. Awwww, that's sweet, you slung him over your shoulder like that. It's a special kind of comfort receiving affection from your animal companion. What did your kitty look like? About six months after my parents' two cats passed away, I was able to talk them into getting a new kitty. I was able to find a breeder in Missouri about 7 hours away. The kitty they got is a chocolate long hair. He's on the small side and cute as a button. And super fast reflexes! The perfect blend of playful and shy. What a charmer!

I like cats, but I love dogs. My husband is the opposite: he likes dogs, but he loves cats. We were planning to adopt one of each (from one of several rescue organizations) when the lockdown happened. I'm still hoping we can go back to that plan in a short time. The idea is to get a dog who's cool with cats, and a cat who digs dogs. Oh, yes--they both have to get along with humans.
