Melvyn Douglas was a good actor but, for me, a little too bland and a little too much akin to the superior William Powell. I like Douglas best in his movies when he was an older man, e.g. Hud and Being There.
I chose Zachary Scott because he was a dangerous character. The look, the voice, the on-screen persona was that of, not a criminal mastermind, but a kind of low level smarmy crook, a destitute con man posing as a rich playboy, but who could also turn killer. On the other hand, he had the range to play a totally nice guy and good father (Shadow On The Wall) when the occasion arose.
