He's certainly a competent filmmaker, but he's not the ideal choice to do something fresh, bold, and new with a franchise as proven by his franchise work.
He really likes to play things safe and/or familiar. He's too concerned about risking upsetting fans so he does like to pander to them.
But all that being said, he can still craft an entertaining film overall even if it is flawed. He can do action scenes fairly well, work with the camera, work with his actors, have a good handle on visual effects, etc.
On the whole, he is a good-at-best director although I doubt he'll ever become one of the greats.

On one hand, he's competent. His films are generally well acted, visually interesting, and nicely paced. On the other, he's a derivative hack who has built a career first by being related to the right people and then by copying the right people. He doesn't know to do a single original anything, nor is he interested. He's a street corner pimp slinging nostalgia and his films are recycled junk food.
What does that average out to? C-?

A-. I liked or loved all his movies. But his obsession with the mystery box is becoming a handicap.

Based on the movies he's directed only Mission Impossible III (2006) is worth mentioning. the rest are forgettable.

A+
I actually like almost all of his Movies (I think that "MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III", "STAR TREK", "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS", "STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS", and "STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER" are all Great Movies, I still however have actually not seen "SUPER 8" yet).

He is a competent, but extremely uninteresting filmmaker. His only good movie is Star Trek (2009).

I own Star Trek (2009) and thought it was actually put together/assembled much better than his widely popular Star Wars films (The Force Awakens etc). This is mostly because he assembled a superior cast in his Star Trek film (Pine, Quinto, Saldana , Urban, Cho etc etc). They had terrific chemistry and not to mention I thought Eric Bana was a surprisingly solid villain . Overall though, JJ is a hack and has waaaaay too much power imo. C- = barely passing. His buddy Matt Reeves (I think they went to college together/could be wrong though) is superior when it comes to sequels/reboots imo. Can't wait to see what he does with The Batman

I'd go as far as to say his Apes trilogy is one of the best trilogies ever made.
