Thoughts on this excellent movie?
I was recently reminded of it on another thread. It's one of my favorites of (relatively) recent years; Jodie Foster's performance is superb, only slightly below her performance in Silence of the Lambs (and superior to her performance in the similar [to Panic Room] but weaker Flightplan).
You know how the critics compare just about every thriller that comes out to Hitchcock right out of the gate? Panic Room strikes me as one of the few truly Hitchcockian modern films I've seen, perhaps even more so than early DePalma (who mastered many of the Master's images and superficialities but few of his plotting techniques or deeper meanings).
That is to say, Panic Room has no "big twists," a thoroughly un-Hitchcockian concept (Psycho notwithstanding), but rather ratcheting, almost unbearable suspense, brilliantly executed. The script is excellent, and the characters act not like fictional figures on the screen but rather like real people in a difficult situation. (This is one of Forest Whitaker's best performances.)
What are your thoughts?

It's the only Fincher movie i score a 7 or higher (which makes it within my Top 199 movies in general (i.e. amongst my favorite movies)).
7/10
p.s. in fact, the only other Fincher movie i mildly like is.. The Game (6/10).

Very good movie. Suspenseful, dramatic and entertaining. Foster is great here. Not Fincher's best movie, but still well directed. 8/10.

For me I think the film started off slow. She looks over the house, talks with her daughter about and moves in over what feels like twenty minutes of the movie.
But I thought it got much better once it moved into the panic room. It kept me on the edge of my seat as she planned escaping from their hideout, getting the medication and saving her ex. 7\10

Like a fair amount of other Fincher movies it's a movie that's got it's twists and sorta keeps you guessing etc wondering what's going to happen next. p.s. outside of Falling Down (1993) (8/10 ; within my Top 62 movies) i would say The Game (1997) is basically Michael Douglas second best movie.

This one's grown on me the most among David Fincher's films. First time I saw it, I was kind of in the middle, but with a second viewing I enjoyed it significantly more. I really think it's quite excellent with Dwight Yoakam's best screen work in my opinion.

Interesting opening credits sequence. Competent direction. Jodie Foster and the rest of the cast are, for lack of a better word, interesting. It was nice to see Patrick Bauchau in it. I liked his movie La collectionneuse (1967) a lot. I disliked the moments when the camera seemed to be moving through walls and furniture for no apparent reason.

I fell completely into the trap of believing that Douglas's character was going to die when he leapt off of the building. Not realistic in the least, but I rather prefer my thrillers that way. It really is an emotionally exhausting picture, though.

It is one of the greatest style-over substance movies ever made as far as I'm concerned but as intelligent people say - with these types of films, the style IS the substance. It is basically a remake of Wait Until Dark (1967) but I much prefer Panic Room. Fincher's ability in creating tension and build up is awe inspiring and he gives us two characters that we care about and root for and 3 memorable villains each with their own specific personality. I know many people dislike Leto's performance but I think he is great here, cornrows and all. One of the best things about it is using the ingenious gimmick of the Panic Room. One interesting thing about this movie is that it almost feels like a movie Fincher made just to experiment with style and furthering his talent at creating suspense. I love the camerawork and lighting in this movie. Great opening credit sequence and a terrific score from Howard Shore as well.
I fully agree about Hitchcock btw. Wait Until Dark felt like Hitchcock too.

LOL. The Game is one of two Fincher movies I dislike (though I far from hate it) and it has largely to do with how uninteresting and illogical the actual "game" is in the film. The ending even if looked at in a non-literal sense, just doesn't work at all for me and feels very anti-climactic. The movie pretty much gets less compelling and effective as it goes along.
