well, this sucks, I would have SO loved to see this in the cinemas. But opens on VOD in June. Looks pretty good. Newest Apatow movie, starring Marisa Tomei and Pete Davidson as mother and son, struggling with the loss of the dad in the family in 9/11, its supposed to be semi-autobiographic by Davidson.

8/10 When Scott began to get along with Ray's kids, I was expecting another subplot where Claire gets angry at him and says something along the lines of "Why are you a good big brother for them when you never were one for me?" Did anyone else predict that?

The Apatow formula of getting a bunch of guys in a room and letting them improv endlessly (usually through casual riffs of each other by comparing them to some thing or celebrity they vaguely look like and placing an adjective in front of it - ie "fat Kanye" and "anorexic panda") got old over a decade ago. This means that basically any scene with Pete hanging out with his friends was a wash. Apatow also pulls a Godfather III with his daughter, only Maude Apatow issn't quite as bad as Sofia Coppola (then again, whos is?) while he writes Marisa Tomei's mom character as what he probably assumes is strong and funny but ends up mostly just unlikable.
Luckily it throws all of them aside and turns into almost a completely different movie in the third act. Davison forced into the fireman world was a lot more endearing than anything that came before and saves the movie. Bill Burr is proving to be a pretty solid actor, and while Davison isn't the best (he makes a lot of weird facial expressions), I like him.

I'm not sure if that's a fair comparison, since Maude had appeared in some of Judd's other movies (Iris as well) and she has also acted in projects where her father wasn't involved.

Usually just in a "cute kid" capacity without a lot of acting demands. Here he gave her more than she could chew.
