Trying for one-a-day, London (just like the vitamin) Thanks. Your post reminded me to take my vitamin pill today, which I often forget. Washed down with a cup of Lysol and I am keeping the virus at bay despite being in the highest-risk category.

Сорок первый (Forty-first) Russian , Eng. title, The Forty First (1956) Soviet Union Dir. Grigoriy Chukhray I watched this yesterday. Super film. I assumed it would be a war film about the exploits of some "Fighting Forty-first" regiment but, though set against the background of the Russian Civil War, it is a love story, very delicately and believably told. The significance of the title is not revealed until almost the last shot. Chukhray's Ballad of a Soldier (1959) was a world-wide hit and aroused interest as to what other gems might be awaiting discovery, but this film is equally good. The cinematography is outstanding, and gives it an "Arabian Nights" quality. Thanks, planetx, for drawing it to our attention. His later film Трясина [Quagmire] (1978) is also on YouTube, but without English subtitles. It does not seem to have been released in in the West.

Thanks so much for the feedback london777 , I have been looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this fabulous film. It is a marvellous still, amongst the elements capturing the potency of the mood. A beautifully filmed cinematic love story with a twist. The Forty-First 's compelling journey not confined on a narrow track, excites with rousing adventure & much emotional depth. I agree it is a film that is equally as good if not better than...and one that deserves recognition from a wider audience through an official international release..
