Ive mostly stuck to John Wayne westerns, this is one of my first indulgences of his war films and I enjoyed about 99 percent of this one. I couldn't help but liken it somewhat to something like Band of Brothers at times as the plot simply seemed to revolve around a small platoon going in and out of combat on a few islands and training in the meantime. Most of the supporting cast were rather...two dimensional, but memorable and entertaining two dimensional...like the shady yet comedic Regazzi or the Flynn brothers who are constantly fist fighting each other. Only a few of them felt outright bland even if the ones that weren't had their personalities boil down to a stereotype. The action was somewhat hit or miss. I enjoyed most of it...but particularly near the end when several characters started dying, I couldn't fully tell who it was unless they mentioned them by name. The end kind of felt abrupt and didn't flow as seamlessly as Id hoped it would...but all in all I definitely liked the film.

Good movie - years since I saw it but I usually put it around number 10 of my favourites from Wayne. Other good non-westerns from Wayne -
They Were Expendable In Harms Way The Longest Day
