From Citizen Kane 1941 to The Survivor 1981 he acted in 131 movies and television productions, so there must be some good during those 40 years. Joseph Cotten (1905β1994)
Some of his best known movies, the audience always remembered somebody else (his own words). According to the book "The World's Greatest Movie Stars - And Their Films" by Ken Wlaschin, he made the argument that Cotten made his best movies during his first nine years, and that after the early 1950s "he was soon reduced to being featured in Westerns and Italian films", though occasionally doing strong performances in movies like The Steel Trap 1952, Niagara 1953, The Great Sioux Massacre 1965, Petulia 1968, A Delicate Balance 1973 and Twilight's Last Gleaming 1977. According to the same author, these are the ten Joseph Cotten essentials: Citizen Kane 1941 The Magnificent Ambersons 1942 Journey Into Fear 1942 I'll Be Seing You 1944 Love Letters 1945 Duel in the Sun 1946 Portrait of Jennie 1948 Under Capricorn 1949 The Third Man 1949 September Affair 1950 Thanks for watching! Feel free to discuss! (I don't agree with everything this author's wrote, though he did a lot of "pay the bills" roles in the later half of his career)

Thanks for this. I wrote an open study essay on Joseph Cotten as part of my literature studies at comprehensive school. I also wrote a lengthy piece to accompany it on Carol Reed's film 'The Third Man' (1949).
The other open study essay I wrote compared horror stories : several stories by Edgar Allan Poe, 'At The Mountains Of Madness' by H.P. Lovcreaft, and the then-recent novel 'Creed' by James Herbert. I enjoyed writing those essays as I could choose my subjects.
Recommended viewing ... 'The Man With The Cloak' (1951), based upon a story by mystery writer John Dickson Carr ...

A favorite here, especially as Holly Martins in The Third Man. Every guy knows what he's feeling in this shot!

Honestly the whole dynamic felt like a flipside to Casablanca, she is admiring a revolutionary for perhaps the worst of reasons?.

Yes - big fan ... and yes - his first decade was as good as anyone had... so maybe inevitable the rest of his career looks relatively less stellar....
I guess SHADOW OF A DOUBT would be his keeper... but he is superb in NIAGARA, and the film itself excellent.
I admire and respect KANE and THE THIRD MAN without loving either. LOVE LETTERS and PORTRAIT OF JENNIE are both top rank romantic dramas and he is well matched with Widow Selznick. I gather he hated his part in DUEL IN THE SUN - "Dressy Jesse" - so a bit surprised that one considered a career peak - the film was enormously successful financially - and for me anyway overall I'd say it is splendid entertainment.... but his dull good guy would have bored most audiences to stupefaction even if he were not up against uberhottie Gregory Peck (playing his brother Lewt) at his bad boy sexiest. No contest which of them that local strumpet Pearl Chavez (Jennifer Jones) wanted to dally with down the sump....
From his star run AMBERSONS, JOURNEY INTO FEAR, GASLIGHT, SINCE YOU WENT AWAY, THE STEEL TRAP, in an unbiled bit in TOUCH OF EVIL, HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE are all recommended
Later efforts as a featured player worth catching are THE MONEY TRAP, SOME MAY LIVE, and PETULIA
DUEL IN THE SUN - no Sump action with Ms Chavez for Cotten here...

Good actor. Powerful presence on the screen. Joseph Cotten is missed.

I realized making my list above that I already have a few of his movies in The Pile that I'll be getting to soon. I will check out Niagara if I can get my mitts on it!

I agree about NIAGARA and strongly urge you to see PORTRAIT OF JENNIE as well.
Agree with JENNIE - definitely a Cotten high point.
Re NIAGARA I don't want to oversell it, but as well as Cotten at full throttle you get one of Marilyn's best chances - if you have only seen her in fluffy comedies she is surprisingly effective as a dark hearted adulteress and would be murderess... and probably was never sexier. Plus the technicolour proto cinemascope marvels of Marilyn and the falls themselves are big plusses.
