I miss Al Jarreau. It was actually movie guys like Harvey Keitel, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro who first turned me on to his talent. My mother liked him but didn't play him much, played more his friend, George Benson. Then, I vividly remember as a teenager, the impact David Mamet had on me. I was very hit and miss with scat jazz up to then as I was all about traditional musical instruments, but Jarreau was different; made me realise the voice is the original instrument in music. And he was more like an instrument in himself, more like comedian Michael Winslow in that regard. Great songwriter, singer, conventional musician, which is perhaps something people too easily forget as his voice became his signature tool. Even in death, he displayed grace, dignity, and flair ... all the things I'd associated with Al Jarreau.
